Measure, optimize and control power consumption
Simple tips and tricks
We show you tips and tricks on how you can save electricity. This often only requires small investments. Whether cooking, surfing the internet or freezing food - you can probably save electricity in almost all everyday activities by changing your behavior, making technical adjustments or replacing outdated electrical appliances.
Save electricity when cooking
The saying "Every pot has a lid" should not only be followed in love. The same applies when cooking: use the exact lid that fits the size of the pot and place the pot on a correspondingly large hob. If there is no suitable hotplate available, the pot should be larger than the hotplate and not the other way around. This allows the pot to absorb the heat from the entire hob. This saves electricity and can also save almost 40 kg of CO2 per year.
Particularly with slow-reacting electric hobs, you should also make sure that you turn the hob down or off completely in good time. This allows you to use the residual heat to continue cooking the dish without the need for additional energy.
This method is so effective that there are already pots that make use of this method: The Hotpan pots from Kuhn Rikon. You simply heat the food briefly on the plate and then place the pot in the heat-retaining bowl. Thanks to the thermal base and keep-warm switch, the food continues to cook without the need for additional energy. You will find a large selection of different pots and sets in our Efficient cooking category.
Detect energy guzzlers
In many households, electrical appliances are used for many years before they finally give up the ghost. The energy efficiency class of the appliance is often no longer known and the instructions for use with the information cannot be found. To identify the power guzzlers in the household anyway, you can use electricity meters. These are simply plugged between the socket and the appliance plug and then measure the power consumption. Brennenstuhl's electricity meters have proven their worth in this context. They measure electricity consumption and store historical data so that it can be analyzed over time.
The myStrom WiFi Switch is even smarter. The device can measure electricity consumption and costs. This data can be sent directly to a smartphone or tablet via an app and conveniently evaluated. But that's not all: you can easily switch the connected appliance on and off using the myStrom WiFi Switch as an adapter plug: By timer, schedule or stand-by. This makes your socket or the connected device smart. You receive all the information on your smartphone or tablet so that you can also check it when you are not at home or have installed the plug in your vacation home. Click here for the product.
Electricity-saving tips:
Save electricity when surfing the internet:
?You can also protect your wallet and the environment when surfing the Internet. For example, if you use a laptop instead of a PC, you can save electricity and save around 130 kilograms of CO2 per year. Tablets and smartphones consume even less energy. Thanks to the mobile-optimized display of most websites, surfing with these devices is now possible without any problems or restrictions.
Save electricity by looking after your appliances:
?Clearly, new electrical appliances with a high efficiency class are cheaper to run than old appliances. This is especially true for refrigerators and freezers that are used continuously. But if you don't want to buy a new appliance, you can still save money by defrosting your appliances regularly: Icing with a thickness of 5 mm increases the energy requirement of an appliance by around 30 %. With the thick layers of ice that form in some appliances, this can have a major impact. If you defrost your refrigerators and freezers once or twice a year, this will be clearly noticeable. To prevent freezing, you should only store food in sealed containers. If they are open, they release moisture and allow the ice layer to grow faster.
Save electricity with the right lighting:
?Incandescent or halogen lights are now banned in Switzerland. However, some households still have a few leftovers, as LED lamps initially had a bad image: their light was cold white and therefore seemed uncomfortable to many. However, modern lights are now also available in the popular warm white. Smart lights in particular can also be illuminated in various bright colors and dimmed. They therefore adapt to the user's individual lighting requirements and are easy on the wallet and the environment. The power consumption of a modern light is 80 % lower than that of a light bulb. You can find a selection of different LED lights in our store in the LED lamps category.
